Hi,I would like to introduce myself as a new slant racer,I am building a 1965 Barracuda,slant6,I bought the car set up for a Hemi,So it might be a little heavy for a slant,it had a dana 60 w/moser 35 spline axels, posi unit, super stock springs,Mustang II front end,Weighs 2400#,Ibought an engine that was built and never run,Iwant to update it and wanted some feedback on what larger valves would work also the cam is a sig erson .465 lift ,Iwould like to know a good starting place to go on a cam,I need a motor plate for front if any one knows where to get one.also what converter to use,iam retired so if anyone has any parts at a good price I would like to hear from you.I have"nt raced since 1969,so I'm looking forward to the season, and meeting you all.I live in Ravenna Ohio, close to Akron. I ran a 65 Barracuda in 60's w/a273 manual shift t/f w/83/4 4:89 gears,Best time 13.60@102 beat some of the best cars at that time F/SA,DonRSmall donrsmall@aol.com 330-297-5874

Welcome Don! Most of the hardcore racers are in Gatlinburg this weekend so it will be a little quiet here.

As far as a motor plate, some of the best fabricators in the Slant 6 world are in Columbus and will be happy to help you out. Call Cox Brothers @ 614/268-9920. They can also steer you along with the rest of the car. They had the 9 second '66 Dart that was on the cover of Mopar Collector's Guide. :D

Welcome, Don.

Maybe we could get some more info on what your goals are. You are saying the car with motor/tranny is 2400 or that's w/o those? How fast do you want to run with this motor/chassis?

That's a fairly mild cam for racing, but you could run somewhere in the high 13s to 15s with it depending on other factors. If it were me, I'd probably just bolt it in and run it this year and see how it goes, but if you want to go faster right away you should go bigger. Talk to the Coxes in person if you want an earful!

Happy building,

Lou Madsen

With a well ported head with big valves (SB Chev 1.72/1.50 or 289 Ford valves work well), good induction, and that cam, you can hit mid 13s. With that light of a car, you can easily get into the (probably low) 12s. Is that a cam that came with a package, or one you are buying. If you haven't bought it yet, I say go bigger. I think Erson may do a 0.540" cam or so that went into a Mopar Muscle or Hot Rod buildup. Other good cam grinders to check are:

reedcams.com
Comp Cams
iskycams.com

Hughes Engines has had mixed reports on quality, but will grind Slant cams also. Ultradyne has made good cams, but had mixed reports on customer service.

Hope this helps and good to have you aboard,

Lou
