Does anyone know of an aftermarket caliper for the Kelsey-Hayes disc brake spindle?I rebuilt my calipers but Im thinking future replacment.

I think the Stainless Steel Brakes Corporation's calipers might be a good matchup. I use them on my car with their kit, and comparing to the pictures I've seen of the KH calipers in my '68 factory service manual, they look identical.

I would actually like to get some regular parts store KH rotors and see if they work with my current setup.

Keep in mind that with parts store rotors, you will not get the hub with it, at least the ones I've seen. You'll have to find a hub and get the junk rotor off and the new rotor on. Those one-piece rotor/hubs from SSBC are a steal at $90 each, IMO.

If you ever get really curious, I could send you a caliper and rotor from the KH setup for comparison (even just a loaner if you want to pay ship). I have a couple of spares of each (marginal to junk rotors).

If, at the parts store, the rotor is listed as "Rotor assembly" it will come with the hub. Otherwise, if just listed as rotor, thats all you will get.

That might not be a bad idea. Maybe when I become a lot less busy soon, we can arrange something like that. I'm curious to know how much SSBC actually copied from the Kelsey-Hayes design.

So, for example, the rotor listed on Rockauto.com for a 1970 Dodge Dart, WAGNER P/N BD60257 is just the rotor without the hub?

I was under the impression that the two-piece rotors were discontinued and replaced with a unicast, one-piece version. I don't know where I got that information, though. Correct me if I that was just one of many Mopar dreams I've had. :lol:

Pat, perhaps you were dreaming ;)

I bought new bendix rotors for my car a few months ago (KH setup because I wanted to keep the SBP) and the rotor came without a hub or any studs.

If you want to devise a new brake setup I suggest stray away from the KH style rotors because you can only cut those 0.020 before they go under spec. The later style LBP rotors you can do lots more, I want to say 0.090 but can't be positive.

I had a heck of a time finding those rotors as it was. I got the last 2 from my local monument for $75 or so each. When it comes down to it and I have to replace the rotors, chances are I won't be able to find them and will swap over to the LBP discs because the rotors are cheaper and, most importantly, more common, easier to find.

I think that SSBC just copied the KH design exactly, except made a spacer as you said to fit the 10" drum spindles. Word on the street is that '64-66 Mustangs also use the same rotors, BUT have 4.5" bolt circle. Don't know about hub/bearing compatibility though.

I have the factory KH rotors on my '68 Dart (20-30k). They are uncut and near the spec limit for cutting, BUT they have worked great. I have 3-4 other rotors in various states of thickness, but likely useable.

Lou raised a very important consideration regarding bearing compatibility and hub size. I can speak to the issue of hub size (read about said fiasco below), but the bearing issue has me pondering. I mean, if i roast a bearing in the middle of BFE Ohio can i get a replacement or will i have to wait for SSBC to get me one? Or, did they just pull a bearing from a catalog and say: ehhh... that's close enuff. Inquiring minds want to know... Finally there is a further consideration of spindle strength, but if you're not seeing any track duty and you keep the Dukes of Hazzard moves to a minimum you should be fine.

I helped a friend of mine install a complete SSBC set-up on the front of his 67 Barracuda. Everything was fairly straight forward, but i noted for the price he paid the quality should've been a little higher and that i could've installed stocker 73~76 disks and rebuilt his whole front end with high quality performance parts-- including shocks and t-bars.
So the SSBC disks are setup for both lug patterns-- the 5X4 and the 5X4.5, and my friend opted to reuse his 5X4 wheels and tires. When we went to put them back on they wouldn't fit-- the hub on the disk was too big. So he says, well let's try the 5X4.5... and we roll the dice again....
Hard 8...
The hub on the SSBC rotor is smaller than the ID of the center register of the 5X4.5" wheel, which wouldn't be a problem except for the fact that the studs on the SSBC rotor are only 7/16"... therefore the wheel is neither hub centric OR lug centric. DOH!

At the end of the day, i wound up knocking the studs out of the SSBC rotor and turning down the hub on a lathe to fit the ID of the 5X4 center register and reinstalling bigger badder ARP units. Of course, i probably could've bored the lug holes larger and went with some 1/2" studs, but then the mount would've been only lug centric... not my cup of tea...

as always: results not typical, YMMV, management is not responsible for articles left behind and for the love of GAWD don't work on your car in the parking lot!!

The bearings used with the SSBC kit are standard issue Mustang disc brake bearings ('65 thru '69 I think, and the same as the Mopar brakes, I believe). I can get the BCA part numbers once I'm back at home.

I have a couple of sets of 10" spindles on the way now. I wanted to replace the right-side spindle to make sure it isn't bent before installing a new rotor/bearings. I gotta get the Dart back on the road so I can keep doing those Dukes of Hazzard moves. :wink: In the meantime, I've been driving an '84 Volvo wagon...a good car, but not really enough power to get out of its own way when pulling out into traffic.

That reminds me of a story from long ago...
I rebuilt my 340 in my college dorm room and installed it in the
parking lot. The security guard was okay with it all as long as I
cleaned up any puddles of oil and ATF. Luckily the dorm dean
never found out !! :lol:

I'm not sure if the J wheels will work with all disc brake setups. They didn't clear the Stainless Steel Brakes copies...the originals must be different.
