After reading all about proportioning valves on this site I set off to pull a stock one from the JY yesterday. I like the idea of a direct swap. I don't have good skills at flare fittings. I got one from a '74 Valiant. My car is a '74 Scamp that I'm doing the disc brake conversion on, amongst other things. Anyways. I pulled a prop valve from a 4 door car, mine is a 2 door.

Are the prop valves the same from 2 door to 4 door being the 4 door is heavier?

The only numbers on the prop valve are some patent numbers. There are 2 numbers on the valve and 2 more on the bracket. There is also a number 5 stamped on the valve. Any idea how to tell what I've got? I pulled it because it was the only one in this yard that looked good. It has a different shape than my stock one. Got it cheap. I don't know for sure the donor had discs because the brakes and spindles were gone. Also the master cylinder was gone but the barke lines to the master cylinder were in a position that looks like it had a booster. I pulled the fender tag numbers as follows.

E24 D34 VP41 C5R 262944

Sorry so long. Thanks.

I'm no expert, but as I understand it:

prop valves are the same for 2- and 4-door. The weight difference is not an issue.

However, you'll need a prop valve from a disc car only, as the hydralic proportioning is set up differently than for a car with drums.

If your donor car had the spindles gone, there's a good chance that it had discs.

There's a fender tag decoder at:

http://www.mymopar.com/tools.htm

You'll have to download it for the 1969-1974 version. That might confirm if your donor was disky.

Good plan, grabbing the brake lines to avoid having to make and flare them. That's save you some time.

Steve

When I bought my first disk brake setup, the person that I bought them from suggested that the best proportioning valve was from a '73 A-body. He had tried several differant ones, from diffreant years, include 1/2 ton trucks, and this one worked the best. I have one in my '65 and the braking is smooth and straight with no lockups.

FWIW, I used a prop valve off an Aspen on my 65 Barracuda when I did the disc brake conversion. It has worked perfectly for over 100,000 miles. It is always a crap shoot with JY parts anyway! I had to replumb mine because it had the old single piston master cylinder and I also added a power booster.
