Alright. So, I got the top end back in and assembled and all. I adjusted the valves and it started right up and ran fine. Just wondering about the mark I used to adjust the valves. There were two on the harmonic balancer.....about 10 degrees apart. I adjusted #1 in line with the first mark that crosses the 0 mark in a clockwise direction...then proceeded from there. I kind of used the direction of the rotor in the distributor as an additional indicator. Now, like I said....it ran fine. Im just worried. How would I know if my valves are adjusted off time? I have to re-adjust soon anyway. Also, is there any way to judge engine temp without a gauge? For instance.....would something be hot to the touch that shouldnt be. My temp. sender isnt screwed into anything....where should it go? I have a 64 225 valiant. Thanks a lot

Temp sender goes in a hole at the top front of the head.

As long as the valves are not too tight you should be OK.
I would readjust them with the engine running.

The sender that is in the engine compartment doesn't jive with the head. The threaded hole in the head is not deep enough for the sender and the fitting on the sender looks wider than the hole. I guess the head is from a different model year. Are there aftermarket senders available or do I have to root around for a good used one that will fit?? Thanks a lot. I'd just like to keep an eye on engine temp for peace of mind type thing. Thanks a lot....

There are two senders. If the head hole is small then ask for a later model ('72>) from the parts store. I'm not sure what year they were changed.

I do not know why Mopar kept switching the sender's thread size. :? :?

The good news is that it's is one of these two sizes, the bad news is that there are a few different resistance ratings between them all.

I have a coffee can full of them and swap until I find one that makes the gauge read about right!

Well I found this out the hard way too I guess. I came home with an aftermarket sender from NAPA yesterday and of course it doesn't jive with the threads in the head. Ive got the small one with the fine threads. Do you know if the other one is offered aftermarket? I think I'll also need the wire feed to the gauge because the sender that is in the car now looks crimped onto the wire....not screwed in. Can I somehow use the wire that's in there?? Thanks

Just crimp on the right connector.

There is also a special "spade" with a hole in one end, basically a small piece of narrow brass flat stock you can bolt onto the sender and then slip the current lead onto the other end.

I have the correct connector for the larger unit if you need one. The smaller one can take a regular nut.
