i am doing homework for shop class and i dont remember how to figure out torque can anyone help?? e.x. prob. if a mechanic uses a wrench 1.5 feet long to apply a 40 pound force to a bolt, what is the torque on a bolt??

Torque = Distance * Force. You must be careful, in that the force term in the equation has to be perpendicular to the object it is being applied with. In your problem, lets pretend the wrench is pointing directly east. That would mean for the answer to be 40 * 1.5 = 60 ft-lbs, the 40ftlb force would have to be applied directly in the north or south direction.

Torque it 'till it strips or breaks, then back off one-half turn.

Think DW and I took the same shop class...lets see...torque wrench from K-Mart $4.95 (marked in some prehistoric language), misc. made in China/Taiwain bolts from Billy Bob's-Grain Silo Sales and Corn Crib remodeling-Bovine Insemination-Legal Aid and Hardware Supply...Dave
